Message Board Rules
If you break the rules, any of these things might happen:
- your posts/accounts might be edited to be within the rules - you're warned to stop - you're prevented from editting your account - you're prevented from posting for a set amount of time - you're confined to the "Other Man" forum - you're banned from the entire board. There's no set order to the process. It's ultimately up to the discretion of the admins and/or mods on what to do. And we can and have changed the rules at any time, with no notice given. You've been warned! IN GENERAL, THE RULES ARE USE YOUR COMMON SENSE. BUT OBVIOUSLY, IN SOME PEOPLE THIS DOESN'T WORK. SO IN THAT CASE, HERE ARE A BUNCH OF RULES SPELLING OUT COMMON SENSE FOR YOU. KEEP YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS VALID - If you sign up with some address that ends up dying and I end up seeing bounced messages going to it, then your account will be disabled until you enter a valid one. LURK MORE - The general rule on ANY discussion forum is to lurk for awhile to get a feel of how things run before you post. The Sloan Message Board is no exception as the masses can be friendly and accepting or a carnivorous horde that will devour your young. Also, do not sign up and advertise your useless non Sloan related shit right away. If you want to advertise something that isn't Sloan related, you must participate for awhile. NO TROLLING - The only exception is in The Other Man forum, which is where you'll be banned to if you DO troll. If you don't know what trolling is, look it up. Ultimately it's going to be up to the mods to make the call. Insults aren't necessarily trolling, but if that's ALL you post, then cya! NO OBSCENE/ANNOYING/RACISTS/OFFENSIVE POSTS (This includes LINKS to such things) - Don't post or link to porn or other blatantly obscene/offensive/annoying/racist stuff. That's a pretty broad rule but it should be common sense. This is where lurking comes in so that you'll know what's acceptable before you go and post something stupid, besides the obvious fact that 99% of such posts are NOT FUNNY and are TOTALLY USELESS. Also, some people might be reading the board from work or shared computers and what not. Have some TACT people. Oh, and easy on the colours. If you like having a rainbow of text in your post, do it in The Other Man NO HUGE SIGNATURES - They should not go over about 100 pixels high or 4 lines of default font text. This goes for text, pictures, links, whatever. Blank lines are included in this! NO TRICKERY- This could include a lot of stuff but mostly what I'm getting at is, no hidden links where one might click on said link and unknowingly perform a board function. Ie) Posting a link that says "Sloan Pictures" but it actually adds someone to an ignore list or logs them out. RESIZE PICTURES - Resize pictures before posting them or using them in your avatar! They shouldn't be big enough so that we have to scroll to see the whole thing or they break the way the board displays posts. 800 vertical by 800 horizontal is probably the maximum size you could get away with in posts. Resizing includes filesize as well. Avatars over about 100K in filesize are TOO BIG. DON'T REMOTELY LINK IMAGES - Remotely linked images ARE NOW strictly against the rules. This is when you cause an image to be displayed in a post when someone views that post. If the image is on your own webspace or somewhere where you have permission to post pictures, this doesn't apply of course. A link to an image is ALWAYS okay, but making it DISPLAY may not be. Not to mention, when you post other people's pictures, they have the power to change them to whatever you want, which could get you BANNED. (hint: GIMMICK ACCOUNTS ALLOWED - for now... Gimmicks are obviously fake, usually duplicate accounts, if you don't know. I'm all for them as long as THEY'RE FUNNY or USEFUL. If you just create one to break the rules, you'll still get your original account banned. DON'T GO OVERBOARD - Keep things within moderation. If the 20 top threads in General are all polls, then uh ya, that's WAY TOO MUCH. You don't need to change your name everyday to the latest "funny" thing you just thought of or heard on the radio USELESS THREADS WILL BE NUKED - Since they'll just get moved or nuked don't bother to begin with since you're just wasting everyone's time. Or better yet, keep it in "The Other Man" to begin with. "Useless" is pretty broad but was inspired by stupid threads where people use the board as a substitute for an instant messenger. THE EXCEPTION - The Other Man is KIND OF the anything goes forum. We're letting a lot more retardedness and flaming and general stupid posts live there than in General. So have fun I guess! But you're still living on the edge should someone decide at any moment you've crossed the line. However, you still can't bandwidth leech by posting images that you aren't hosting, post blatant porn, etc, EVEN IN THE OTHER MAN. Also, keep in mind that ALL posts in The Other Man are periodically purged. If you don't want your post to be purged and it's otherwise within the rules, don't post it in that forum. |
