| The Sloan Message Board > General Dump > Chesty's new music blog! |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Jan 5 2006, 12:32 AM |
| Hey! Guess what I heard! CTM has a new music-related blog! Isn't that great! Everyone should read it every day! What a great idea that is! I wish I had come up with it! The first post is even up! WOW! Really, though, the site still has some quirks me and my friend Paul, who's hosting for me, are working out, hence the weird arrangement of that long post. I wrote about the new Hip greatest hits set, and there's even a reference or two to Sloan tucked away in there... Read it http://kpaul.no-ip.org/rossblog/ and lemme know what you think! You can even comment there if you like! |
| Posted by: SHP Jan 5 2006, 12:43 AM |
| My goodness! That is quite the undertaking, Chet! I won't be able to comment because um, I don't know what music is . . . ? I like your style, my dear! |
| Posted by: MartyZ Jan 5 2006, 12:45 AM |
| eep! CTM! I love you nd your Hipness *har!* [runs to put on Phantom Planet and rock out] |

| Posted by: SHP Jan 5 2006, 12:52 AM |

That's it! I'm not donating to the Bonzo Goes to Bittberg fund. I mean the Get Trigger to Bala fund. |

| Posted by: Trigger Jan 5 2006, 01:07 AM |

Well, there's a Festus, albeit a dead one, in the book I'm reading. |

| Chesty- I will comment on your site soon. Also I will scan some Hip photos for you. I will be a faithful reader. Interesting you switched to word press. |

I didn't exactly "switch" to WordPress. My webmaster buddy, who actually knows about these things, just found a template that seemed to work OK and look OK... And thanks for the promised faithfulness, Leah. Hip photos would be wicked... |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Jan 5 2006, 01:16 PM | ||
Thanks, DP! Your appreciation means a lot... |
| Posted by: racergrl754 Jan 5 2006, 02:42 PM | ||
Do you know if I can post the photos on your comments page? |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Jan 5 2006, 02:45 PM | ||||
No clue... Probably not... |
| Posted by: kickstartmyheart Jan 5 2006, 03:16 PM | ||||
I think so, Brain...but if they called them 'sad meals', kids wouldn't buy them! |
| Posted by: Morrigan Jan 5 2006, 04:19 PM |
| Bob Caygeon is my favorite Hip song too. (Wheat Kings being second). When those constellations "reveal themselves one star at a time" the hairs on my arms stand up one hair at a time. It's spooky good. And now that I live in Toronto, "that night in Toronto" gives me chills too. Even though - from what I'm told - the reference isn't a particularly pretty one (something about a race riot?) |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Jan 5 2006, 04:25 PM | ||
It's certainly about a riot, Downie says as much, but whether it's a specific reference to an actual event or not, I can't say. If it is, that's news to me... |

| Chesty, I am still waiting for my word press password to be sent to comment on your blog. Anyway I am PM you a link to my hip photos I scanned for you. They are from a festival the radio station I worked for had. Unfortunately they were first on the bill, not many folks there. I will find more from other shows for ya soon. |

| Two days, two new posts! I've got some free download links in today's post, and I pimp Beth's site, too, so you know you have to check it out... And no one's commented yet! This makes me a sad panda. I know you have to register to do it, but take the trouble, please... And I got your PM, Leah, thanks! Look for my answer... |
| Posted by: racergrl754 Jan 6 2006, 04:03 PM |
| I registered with Word Press yesterday to comment but have yet to receive a password. I will try again, I was having internet trouble at work yesterday. Damn them, don't they know I have "work" to do! Edit- You didn't say if you "liked" the Hip photos? |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Jan 6 2006, 04:09 PM | ||
I didn't say I looked at them, either... I checked the blog options today, I doubt I can speed up the comment process without talking to my webmaster friend. There's been a few complaints about having to login to comment, I'll see if I can fix that... |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Jan 6 2006, 04:13 PM |
| OK, I just checked them out, very cool. Gord with hair! Rage played the same festival? Damn good bill... |

| Rolling Stones straight up! Love that song. |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Jan 30 2006, 02:07 PM |
| OK, so, as those who have read my blog since last evening may know, I have a new long-term project at Rossblog: a Top 50 Rock Albums of the 1990s list. I've got a poll of ten up, so vote on those. So, I have a few mentioned and taken down already (OK, a lot taken down already), but any suggestions would be appreciated... Also, when I narrow the list to fifty, I'll probably have a big post (or series of posts, more likely) for the list, with brief write-ups for all the selections. Now, I expect there will be several titles on the list that I don't own or don't know well (in fact, I hope there are), so I'd like to solicit some short write-ups on said albums, two or three sentences at most. So if you make a suggestion, you could post a little mini-review, too, or PM it to me. That would be cool... |

| OK, so as a few of you know, I finally got down to working on that Best Rock Albums of the 90s list I was yakking about a while ago. Short reviews of my first ten selections are up on my blog, but I need some help with some of the others! I've already got a few SMBers on the case, but the list is 50 strong so I need some of you to lend me your skillz! I'm asking for short reviews of 3 or 4 sentences. You can see what I mean at my post http://kpaul.no-ip.org/rossblog/?p=39. If you want to do one, just post in this thread, or PM me (not so much the former, preferably the latter), I'll remove the albums as they're called. Here's what I need... Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream* Nirvana - Nevermind* Live - Throwing Copper REM - Automatic For The People Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral* Wilco - Summerteeth* The Tragically Hip - Day For Night My Bloody Valentine - Loveless* Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted* Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever* Thanks! Edit: the * indicates that I don't have/know the album and therefore would put priority on calling them... |

| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Feb 12 2006, 12:58 PM |

| Posted by: kickstartmyheart Feb 12 2006, 01:29 PM |

This record has sentimental value for me because my hubby and I listened to it all the time while we was courtin'. |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Feb 12 2006, 01:46 PM | ||||
Is that merely a rosy reminiscence, or are you offering to write something about it? |
| Posted by: slmader Feb 12 2006, 01:48 PM |

| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Feb 12 2006, 01:52 PM |
| Yes, please! It's a pain to get them out of MSN histories... Just a PM would be great, with whatever name or handle you want me to post them with; thanks, Martina! |
| Posted by: MartyZ Feb 12 2006, 01:57 PM |

| Mine is also sent, have fun. 1600! |
| Posted by: The Big LeBrentski Feb 12 2006, 04:59 PM |
| I'll take these, unless someone has spoken for them: Blur - Parklife Soundgarden - Superunknown Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape Nirvana - In Utero Supergrass - In It For The Money If you get really desperate, I might do a few more (like Full Moon Fever, if I can find my copy), but these are the ones I'm most passionate about. Two things: Probably won't get around to it today, and what is the purpose of the list (out of curiosity)... just to keep permanently on your blog? |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Feb 12 2006, 05:07 PM |
| Just for the heck of it, really. Everybody loves best-of lists, right? That and raising funds for my $3500-a-day habit. So please include $3500 with your reviews... They're all yours, Brent! No hurry, I'm gonna probably wait a week or so until I post my next installment of the list. Just PM 'em to me along with whatever name/handle you want published when you're ready... |

Edit: Oh, and disregard the fact that my moronic blog has suddenly decided that it would be totally keen to bold almost every letter on the page for no bloody reason at all. Fuck... |

| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Feb 18 2006, 07:35 PM |
| Aww, thanks, Nat. I have one of Marty's reviews and one of Kate's left over, but I need to cobble together 8 more by next week, so something (perhaps, um, something shorter And I'm in another sig, score! What's that, four in a row now? |
| Posted by: Ruhee Feb 18 2006, 07:38 PM |
| Hey Ross, it looks like you just muddled up the bold code on the Blue Album heading. Fix that and you should be on your way. Woohoo - nice reviews for all though - and ha ha, I got Sloan, clearly I win |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Feb 18 2006, 07:41 PM | ||
I did fix it. Four times. Then the plague spread to the rest of the page. Fuck. |
| Posted by: Ruhee Feb 18 2006, 07:45 PM |
| When I source it there's a whole bunch of extra 'strong' tags around that section and a weird one with a slash following instead, I'm not sure if they are all useful, maybe consolidate everything inside of one set of tags and get rid of the rest. And/or, maybe faux-edit the entry below it (like, I don't know what you use to post, but open the entry and submit it again, and maybe that will refresh the code). I dunno. |
| Posted by: The Big LeBrentski Feb 19 2006, 01:54 AM | ||
by "shorter", do you mean shorter than 3 or 4 lines, or shorter than next week? |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Feb 19 2006, 01:55 AM | ||||
I mean, "shorter than kickstart's abuse of the 4 sentence limit"... |
| Posted by: The Big LeBrentski Feb 19 2006, 02:02 AM |
| Noted. I will endeavour to be more concise than verbose. |

Gah! YOU. COMPLETE. ME. "Wanna shake your faith in human nature..." Brent wrote a Nevermind review, which I'm not sure he was supposed to. But he has four others, too, so I might grab yours instead... Edit: Brent wrote In Utero, so it's all yours, twink... |

| oh i forgot that line! yes that's part of it! and wheat kings makes me teary-eyed for the me and the friends that were my last two years of high school - it was beautiful and wondrous and that song encapsulates it...partly bc we listened to it A LOT and partly because it evokes something... oh and you know the WORST FUCKING PART about taking your fave cds (that aren't ripped to your computer) home for christmas? FORGETTING THEM AT HOME!!!! pinkerton and phantom power and ok computer and romeo & juliet soundtrack and U2 pop and RH hail to the thief which i haven't given a proper listen to and probably a few more. fuck. |

| Posted by: sloan obsessed Feb 19 2006, 01:54 PM |
| The 90's Hip albums are like the soundtrack of my highschool years. Everyone of the songs reminds me of some crazy moment from the past. |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Feb 19 2006, 02:19 PM |
| That's the experience of growing up in Canada in the '90s. I share it... It's still a little amazing to me that Downie can get thousands of beer-swilling jocks to sing along to something as deep and obtuse as "Grace, Too" or "Nautical Disaster"... |
| Posted by: The Big LeBrentski Feb 19 2006, 03:06 PM |
| I forgot to tell you my real name... my SMB name is fine, unless you want the real thing. Hail to the Thief is phenomenal. |

| Hello friends... Could I possibly ask that any of those who owe me reviews for the list... um... snap to it? A bit? I'd like to toss up part 4 sometime in the next few days and I only have 8 reviews available, 4 of which are mine... Also: here are the albums I'm still looking to have reviewed... Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral Wilco - Summerteeth Pearl Jam - Ten Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever Summerteeth is the only one I can write myself, so it would be nice to get some help... | Got your e-mail, Brent! I larfed, because I used to use "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" as my e-mail sig... If you don't play mp3s on your computer, then a DVD-R would do you no good. I'll hold onto your e-mail, use some select tracks on your mix CD when I draw you, and maybe send another bonus disc your way before that... |
| Posted by: MartyZ Mar 5 2006, 12:33 AM |
| Chesty... i'm probably never gunna get around to reviewing Ten for you. = S. Sorry homie. Love me still? |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Mar 5 2006, 12:36 AM |
| If anything, I love you more... Plus, if you noticed, I put it back onto the list, as a vote of non-confidence... :sticksouttongue: |

| One? I have nothing else to do while I listen except post here, Brent, so I'm making you a little CD as |
| Posted by: BGs4ever Mar 5 2006, 12:59 AM |
| I would have taken part in this mix swap, only it's a waste because my music isn't widely accepted in these parts... |
| Posted by: kickstartmyheart Mar 5 2006, 12:59 AM |
| Oh Chesty One! I am working on Gordon as we speak. Since it's aboot time I got off me arse. |
| Posted by: racergrl754 Mar 5 2006, 01:05 AM |
| Kate, let people hear your music, it is fine and worth one opening ones mind for! BTW Glad to see you got the eyebrow move avitar going with Pete. Who'd thought I would get my catchphrase from CM himself! You will have to teach me how to make the moving avitar. AND I love Stubblecat's right now too! |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Mar 5 2006, 01:06 AM |
| Yay! I think I might just drop some of those albums if nobody takes them. There's others I could slot in and write myself just as easily, and the list, for all its merits, isn't exactly definitive... |
| Posted by: BGs4ever Mar 5 2006, 01:12 AM | ||
It involves Paint Shop Pro and Animation Shop 3...okay Dave can help you on this one.... And Ross...would you be interested in a swap? |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Mar 5 2006, 01:26 AM |
| Swapping bodily fluids or music? Because both of those might get me tossed in jail... |
| Posted by: BGs4ever Mar 5 2006, 01:27 AM |

| Posted by: The Big LeBrentski Mar 5 2006, 02:25 AM | ||
You're making me a CD? I... I don't know what to say! ....and I don't think you should let those albums die... they were all great and very important |
| Posted by: The Big LeBrentski Mar 5 2006, 02:27 AM | ||
I'll take these three, but not tonight. |

Disarm makes me sad, but it's still very good. Explains why I was depressed in Grade 4. Today makes me smile. I like the video. The End |

| Ahh shucks... I'm a little embarrassed by that question now, but I was just wondering if I should do anything differently this time. If they're too long, feel free to shave a sentence or two, Chesty. heehee.... shave Chesty |

Perhaps some of the ladies would like me shaved. Perhaps not. I've been finding your length ample, Brent. Yes, I am aware of how that sounds. Natalia's reviews, on the other hand... Good to have you back, Que: I can feel my hard-won self-esteem ebbing away already... |
| Posted by: SHP Mar 9 2006, 11:40 AM |
| Your hardness is ebbing? Pffft. I knew it. Too good to be true. |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Mar 9 2006, 11:50 AM |
| Oh, right, now that your big wrestling man is back, I'm just chopped liver, aren't I? Fine, I've still got my Brentski... |
| Posted by: SHP Mar 9 2006, 11:54 AM |

Claire, Why do you have a near naked women (Carmen Elektra?) as your avitar? How about a Sloan member with just a scarf instead? |
| Posted by: sloanfan Mar 9 2006, 02:51 PM | ||||||

Virginal? Dream on darlin of those days. Maybe you can bag a few but one yourself again, nope! Umbrage- nice, had to use dictionary.com. Damn when I try to be clever and cute, I end up getting Clare jealous and you pulling out the big guns! |
| Posted by: sloanfan Mar 9 2006, 03:48 PM | ||

| Posted by: sloanfan Mar 9 2006, 04:00 PM |
| Well what the hell, how many times has my name been posted here? Spelling it wrong seems insulting at worst and a titch lazy at best. The third comment was mostly to strip up trouble. Heh. Me likey trouble. |

I guess that makes me the Stubby Clapp to your Dontrelle Willis. |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Mar 9 2006, 08:11 PM | ||||
But you would never accept a nickname like Stubby, I take it? False advertising hurts everyone... |
| Posted by: Super Quemortal Mar 9 2006, 08:21 PM |
| I'm hoping the Clapp part is also misleading, though I was in New York City recently... |

| Posted by: Elias Mar 10 2006, 02:11 PM | ||
The key question is, "Are you Kosher by injection?" |
| Posted by: sloanfan Mar 10 2006, 02:12 PM | ||
HA! I am, thoroughly |
| Posted by: Elias Mar 10 2006, 02:14 PM | ||
You're practically Jewish. The other day, I could have sworn I heard you say, "Wednesday is double coupons at the supermarket! Oy, such a deal!" |
| Posted by: racergrl754 Mar 10 2006, 02:20 PM | ||
Well my dad injected the kosher into my mom...OH god that is so wrong.. My mom always said my taste in wild clothing and my money practices were truly the jew in me |

| Um... yeah. As long as everyone's still posting in here, I might as say that I have a new post up, big long thing on Neil Young. http://kpaul.no-ip.org/rossblog/ You know you wanna... |
| Posted by: SHP Mar 10 2006, 04:16 PM |
| I thought you typed "Neil Young in a thong". I swear I read that! |

| So did I. |
| Posted by: ChesterTheMolester Mar 10 2006, 04:19 PM |
| Neil Young does not wear thongs. Chet, on the other hand... |
| Posted by: Evashin Mar 10 2006, 04:20 PM |

Neil Young in a thong? |
| Posted by: The Big LeBrentski Mar 10 2006, 11:11 PM |
| Neil Young can do whatever he wants! |
| Posted by: Super Quemortal Mar 10 2006, 11:22 PM |
| He actually wrote a song about his thong once: "In The Great Divide." |
| Posted by: DearPrudence Mar 10 2006, 11:27 PM |
| Neil Young is far too awesome to ever be caught dead in a thong. Or even thinking about one, for that matter. |
| Posted by: BGs4ever Mar 10 2006, 11:35 PM |
| I love Neil Young, but I wouldn't want him to be like Keith Richards in public... |
| Posted by: SHP Mar 11 2006, 07:22 PM |
| Yes, Adam. Real men do wear thongs. Ask Ed. |
| Posted by: Evashin Mar 11 2006, 07:27 PM |
| I've always wondered; does Ed know Chuck Norris? |
